Course Aim (all learning environments)

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training course which teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue. You’ll learn to recognise warning signs of mental ill health and develop the skills/confidence to approach and support someone while keeping yourself safe. Additionally, you’ll learn how to empower someone to access the support they might need for recovery or successful management of symptoms. This could include self-help books or websites, accessing therapy services through their GP, their school or place of work, online self-referral, support groups, and more.

In-House option

Delivery to your team at your selected premises at times to suit. Bringing everything needed, including presentation equipment – if there is none to use at the venue, deliver where your team can relax in familiar surroundings and be more comfortable discussing issues and learning new skills.

On-Line option

Following the traditional Face-to-Face syllabus, the On-Line Adult MHFA course has been ‘slightly’ modified to suit the new delivery medium. Each delegate (max 16 per course) will receive, before the course start date, a full course pack in the post and emailed instructions detailing how to log into the Learning Management System (LMS) and access downloads. Additionally, they will be provided with the brand-new market-leading phone app to use during the course.

The LMS will require all delegates/tutors to log in and use Video/Microphone tools from their computers to participate in the Live Sessions. Breakout ‘rooms’ and group and individual sessions will be utilized. An MHFA phone app is used during the course, so it is recommended that these are viewed before the course. Please ask for details if this is a barrier to learning.

Course Objective

Upon successful completion of the training program and final assessment, Mental Health First Aiders will have:

  • An in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
  • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
  • Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support

A theory-based course over 12 hours, typically carried out over 2 consecutive days (other delivery options are available). The online, tutor-led course comprises 2 full days (consecutive or not) or split into 4 x 4.5-hour sessions. All those attending all training sessions will receive a nationally recognised certificate which is valid for 3 years. Furthermore, those who attend are eligible to, at additional cost, take the Level 3 Award in Understanding Mental Health First Aid exam – please ask for further details. This is not a requirement of the course, but some individuals may find that this formal exam and qualification is of benefit.

Candidates will receive, by download, an ‘Adult MHFA Manual Two Day’ colour reference manual. Couriers will send the ‘Adult MHFA Workbook’, which is a clear, concise and valuable review tool for future reference.
